The Romanian side of the hydro power plant for the Navigation and Hydro Power System (SHEN) at Portile de Fier I, on Danube River, is equipped with six vertical hydro power units with Kaplan turbines, having the diameter of the turbine runner of D = 9500 [mm], directly coupled with the synchronous hydro generators. The design of each hydro power unit is "umbrella" type. Taking into account the dimensions and the unit power, these hydro power units represented a national and even a world premiere in respect of the installed capacity of a hydro power unit fitted out with Kaplan turbines. At that time and even at present, the H.E.P.P. Portile de Fier I is the largest power plant on the Danube River, both as concerns the installed capacity and the dimensions of the hydro power units.

The six hydro power units that fits the Romanian side of SHEN Portile de Fier I were put into operation within 1970-1972, three of the six hydro power units being made in Romania (U.C.M.R.) and the other three ones made in Russia (L.M.Z. and Electrosila)

  • Range of net heads: 17,5-35,46 m
  • Rated power at turbine coupling: 178 MW
  • Runner diameter: 9500 mm
  • Rated speed: 71,43 rpm
  • Optimal net head: 29,95
  • Maximum efficiency: 94%

During over 25 years of service since their putting into operation and until 1998, when the contract for the rehabilitation of the hydro power units was signed, each of these power groups stored about 170.000 hours of operation, meaning 6800 hours/year.
